Love, Power and Resistance is an in-depth study dedicated to the space of intimate relationships as they are represented in selected works of Arundhati Roy, Uma Parameswaran, Anita Rau Badami and Shauna Singh Baldwin.
The book explores different aspects of gender relations following the three main thematic directions suggested in the title.
Drawing on philosophy, mythology, sociology and postcolonial feminism, the author constructs a comprehensive picture of the literary works analyzed by focusing on couples’ relations and how they intersect with exterior impositions.
The novelty of the book stems not only from the unique approach of these female writers of Indian descent, but also from the introduction of a new critical concept: the Third Space of Love.
The study is an insightful literary analysis which convincingly demonstrates that intimacy in characters’ lives is fraught with multiple interpretations which reach beyond the sphere of the erotic into a space of intercultural interaction.
